A new documentary by renowned pediatric audiologist Jane Madell, PhD, and Emmy and Peabody Award-winning director, producer, writer and cinematographer Irene Taylor Brodsky will premiere on Friday, March 9 at the American Cochlear Implant Alliance’s (ACIA) annual scientific meeting in Washington, DC. A champagne reception and panel discussion with Dr. Madell and five of the young adults featured will follow conference sessions on Friday afternoon.

The Listening Project features interviews with fifteen young adults who were born deaf and diagnosed with hearing loss later than usual by today’s standards because newborn hearing screening was not widely conducted at the time. The individuals featured in the film grew up using hearing aids. Some adults featured in the film did receive cochlear implants, but at a time when cochlear implants were not yet available for young children.

The film demonstrates the impact cochlear implants and other audiological interventions have on the personal lives and later careers of children with hearing loss.

The documentary will also be shown at the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) meeting in Denver on March 19th and the annual AG Bell meeting in Scottsdale in June. According to the filmmakers they are finalizing plans to distribute the film for a wider viewing audience. In addition to the documentary there is a shorter version of the film intended for school age children to learn more about hearing loss and cochlear implants.
