Nathan Spackman’s patent #12572225 B1, for a Wireless earbud case with mouse functionalities, is potentially a great example of the original principle and modern evolution of “form follows function” design. Done right physically, the device’s practical design comprises ergonomics, internal layout, and usability as a mouse and a charging/storage case. It maximizes user behavior by merging two common objects into a unified shape that reduces cognitive load and the likelihood of misplacement.
This isn’t the first rodeo for a multitasking mouse, but the design benefits from new thinking. As the author puts it:
others have developed computer mouse peripherals with earbud chambers at the bottom of the mouse … to store earbuds and charge them. Other attempts include computer mouse peripherals with a compartment on the side that can house retractable or wireless earbuds. While these examples help users by reducing the number of devices they need to keep track of, these examples still pose additional disadvantages such as creating difficulty for the user to retrieve their earbuds by storing the earbuds on the bottom of the mouse or storing them on the side of the device.
