Oh, The Places We Will Go – Harbinger of Deregulation?

Gael Hannan
In this week’s post, Angela Loavenbruck continues with her look at the “Audiology Elephant” of the PCAST recommendations.     by Angela Loavenbruck   In my last two columns, I examined the imaginary elephants that PCAST participants and audiologists have created.  I was pretty crabby in both of those discussions.   I hoped to make some positive suggestions about how audiologists

The Contrarion: Locked Into What?

Michael Metz is back with The Contrarian, a monthly column that invites considered opinion and informed debate within the Audiology profession.           Locked into What?   Consider this situation:  a physician prescribes specific medication for a patient’s illness. The medication is unlabeled and dispensed unmarked to the patient.  When the patient seeks another opinion about this

Lolly Wigall

The Audiology Elephant

Angela Loavenbruck
In my last entry, I examined the mythical elephant PCAST created in its examination of the hearing healthcare system. The creature seemed to be purely product – no professional services needed – and closely resembled the vision of the Consumer Electronics Association and PSAP manufacturers. In many ways, the PCAST report is the epitome of the commoditization of hearing healthcare.

By Angela Loavenbruck, Ed.D. Over the past several months, the Crabby Audiologist has been doing a little historical review of Audiology’s transition from a tiny, barely known profession to one that’s made it onto the 10 Best Jobs List the last several years running. In that transition, no one can deny the importance of ASHA’s early work (1950’s and 60’s)

Do You Have Your Hearing Aids On?

Lolly Wigall
Do you want to call it hearing abuse?  Or do you just want to call it ignorance?  Maybe I can be generous and call it “holiday stress”.  The phenomenon seems to be more prevalent this time of year than at other times of the year.  Winter is approaching and there is some anticipation of the cold weather impacting travel.  Feelings
