The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) has released a draft version of a new Clinical Practice Guideline (GPG) for Vestibular Rehabilitation (VR). The panel includes some of the best in the business, representing Physical Therapy, Neurology, Otolaryngology and Audiology, among others. I had the privilege of representing Audiology on the CPG panel for BPPV several years ago, so I appreciate the effort that went in to this.
The VR CPG panel was charged with answering the question, “Is vestibular exercise effective at enhancing recovery of function in people with peripheral vestibular hypofunction?” A review of the available literature allowed the panel to make a recommendation, for or against, specific components of VR. Topics regarding candidacy, type, frequency and duration of exercises were reviewed.
The draft is open to public comment until May, 20, 2015. If you want to view the entire document, click here.
