While technological advances continue to evolve the world of hearing devices, other technologies delve closer to the core problem by considering methods to nip the hearing problem in the bud, thereby alleviating the need for some devices that limit themselves to hearing correction. Here are a few nip-in-the-bud patents in this month’s list:
- #11433073 by Ting Therapeutics reports on treatment or prevention of hearing loss by administering to an animal in need thereof an inhibitor of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)
- Sensorion’s #11433077 notes a chemical problem and suggests a chemical solution: characteristics do not render traditional CNIs (cyclosporin A & tacrolimus) acceptable drug candidates for the treatment of sensorineural hearing loss. [but]… certain setron family members capable of inhibiting the protein phosphatase calcineurin effectively treated hearing loss in a pre-clinical animal model when administered after acoustic trauma.. …use of calcineurin-inhibiting members of the setron family of compounds as safe and effective therapeutic agents in prophylaxis and treatment of sensorineural hearing loss.

Holly Hosford-Dunn, PhD, owned and operated a dispensing audiology practice in Tucson and was active in management of HearingHealthMatters.org through 2017.
