NEW YORK—Arielle Schacter, a contributor to the Hearing Views section of Hearinghealthmatters.org (see her October 12 post), has been selected by Glamour magazine as one of “21 Amazing Young Women of 2011.”
Schacter, a 17-year-old high school senior in New York City, has been hard of hearing since early childhood. Rather than hold her back, her hearing loss has inspired her, Glamour said, to “crusade on behalf of youth who are deaf or hard of hearing.”
To this end, she founded an online community, bf4life–hearing. She has also blogged on The Huffington Post and is an active supporter of the Hearing Access Program, which aims to make the world more accessible for people with hearing loss. Earlier this year, she received an Oticon Focus on People Award.
Glamour decided to honor 21 young women “who are already making a huge difference in the world” to mark the 21st anniversary of its Women of the Year feature. The publication held a special ceremony November 7 to recognize them.
