Dennis Van Vliet, AuD, whose award-winning monthly column, The Final Word, has appeared in The Hearing Journal (HJ) since 1996, is moving to The Hearing Review (HR). His first column at HR will appear in the May issue, according to an announcement by that publication.

Van Vliet, who for many years owned and operated a private practice in California, is currently senior director of professional relations for Starkey Hearing Technologies.

The Final Word, which was honored in 2009 and 2010 in the Best Column category of the American Society of Healthcare Publications’ annual awards competition, draws upon its writer’s 36 years of experience in audiology to offer useful advice and insights to practitioners in a lively, often humorous tone.

Van Vliet is a leader in his profession, having served on the board of directors of the American Academy of Audiology and chaired its 1998 Convention in Los Angeles. He was a founder of the Independent Hearing Aid Fitting Forum, which developed protocols for fitting non-linear hearing aids when these devices were starting to become widely used. He received the 2001 Joel Wernick Award from the Academy of Doctors of Audiology.

Van Vliet frequently speaks at professional conference and has written for a number of publications, including Hearinghealthgmatters.org, where he posted a Hearing View last fall about direct-to-consumer hearing aids.
