NEW YORK — Actress Marlee Matlin will make her Broadway debut in the upcoming Deaf West production of Spring Awakening this fall at the Brooks Atkinson Theater in New York. Previews will begin on September 8th and will be performed simultaneously in English and American Sign Language (ASL).

Matlin, who has starred in a number of well known television series and movies, is the only deaf actress to have ever won an Academy Award. In 1987, the then 21 year-old actress won the Oscar for her performance in Children of a Lesser God. That same performance also won her the 1987 Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama.

In her Broadway debut this fall, Matlin will be joining a mixed cast of 27 of deaf and hearing performers.

Highly Anticipated Production

In the upcoming production Ms. Matlin will play Frau Gabor, mother to the character Melchior, and will also play Frau Schmidt. Melchior’s best friend Moritz is also deaf, and Matlin’s character Frau Gabor is said to help serve as a role model to him.

Deaf West Theatre‘s staging of Spring Awakening has received critical acclaim and recently completed an engagement at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Los Angeles, where it was expanded following a sold out production at the Rosenthal Theater.
