RESTON, VIRGINIA — On February 9th the American Academy of Audiology (AAA) announced its 2017 honorees. These distinguished professionals are being recognized by AAA for the significant impact to the audiology profession or hearing sciences. They will be honored at the upcoming AudiologyNOW! meeting, April 5-8, in Indianapolis. Together, the honorees will present a CEU learning module, “The Evolution of Audiology from Past to Present: Honoring Today’s Leaders,” on Thursday, April 6 at 3:00 pm.
The following individuals will be honored:
MARION DOWNS AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN PEDIATRIC AUDIOLOGY
Jane R. Madell, PhD, Professor, Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Madell is a certified audiologist, speech-language pathologist, a listening and spoken language specialist, and an auditory verbal therapist. For nearly 50 years, she has dedicated her career to helping children with hearing impairment and other auditory disorders.
She has published five books, authored or co-authored numerous chapters, peer-reviewed papers, and developed online and magazine articles.
“The Marion Downs Award for Excellence in Pediatric Audiology is awarded to an audiologist for his or her exceptional contributions to pediatric audiology; contributions that have made an impact on the profession of audiology as a whole. JERGER CAREER AWARD FOR RESEARCH IN AUDIOLOGY
James A. Henry, PhD, VA Research Career Scientist at the National Center for Rehabilitative Auditory Research (NCRAR), Portland, Oregon VA Medical Center, and Research Professor, Dept. of Otolaryngology, Oregon Health & Science University.
Dr. Henry is widely acknowledged as an authority in the area of tinnitus and has helped develop methods for evaluating the psychoacoustic characteristics of tinnitus.
The Jerger Career Award is given to an individual with a distinguished research career in audiology and/or hearing sciences. Recipients must be members of the Academy and have at least 25 years of research productivity in audiological and/or hearing sciences research.
SAMUEL F. LYBARGER AWARD FOR ACHIEVEMENTS IN INDUSTRY
James F. Patrick, MSc, for his years of research involving cochlear implants.
The Lybarger award is given to an individual who has pioneered or has made major contributions to significant research or engineering achievements within the field of hearing.
INTERNATIONAL AWARD IN HEARING
José Juan Barajas de Prat MD, PhD. Dr Barajas is a dedicated contributor in audiology and electrophysiology of the auditory system. He has been the organizer and president of several international audiology congresses.
The International Award is given to honor and recognize the achievements of an audiologist and/or hearing scientist who lives and works outside the United States that has provided outstanding contributions to the profession of audiology in a clinical, academic, research or professional capacity.
CAREER AWARD IN HEARING OR BALANCE
Amy M. Donahue, PhD, Chief of the Hearing and Balance/Vestibular Sciences Branch at the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The Career Award is given to a non-audiologist with a distinguished career in the field of audiology, hearing and/or balance over a period of at least 25 years.
DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
John Greer Clark, PhD, Assistant Professor, Director UC/Kenneth Donnelly Audiology Clinic, University of Cincinnati and private practice owner.
Sumitrajit (Sumit) Dhar, PhD, Professor, Northwestern University.
The Distinguished Achievement Award is given to an individual who is or has been an exceptional educator, researcher or clinician in the field of audiology and whose contributions include collective and significant contributions in the areas of education, research or to the profession of audiology.
