NationsBenefits announced this week that it has been selected by Sam’s Club to manage hearing centers across Sam’s Club locations nationwide, introducing a new hearing care model focused on integrated clinical care, tele-audiology support, and health plan connectivity.

The collaboration brings NationsHearing technology and hearing care services directly into Sam’s Club Hearing Centers, offering members access to prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids, hearing evaluations, fittings, and remote support services.

Sam’s Club Moves from the Lucid Hearing Model

The announcement represents a significant operational shift for Sam’s Club hearing centers, which had previously operated under the Lucid Hearing model for many years. Lucid Hearing maintained a large presence inside Sam’s Club locations nationwide and primarily focused on selling its own Lucid-branded hearing aids through the retailer.

By contrast, NationsHearing positions itself as a multi-brand hearing care platform offering hearing aids from major manufacturers across a wide range of price points and technology levels.

The company states that its network provides access to more than 1,200 hearing aid makes and models, including products from brands such as Phonak, ReSound, and Starkey.

The transition therefore represents more than just a management change — it signals a broader shift in Sam’s Club’s hearing care strategy from a primarily single-brand retail model toward a more traditional multi-manufacturer hearing center approach.

A More Direct Challenge to Costco?

Industry observers may view the new NationsBenefits partnership as an effort by Sam’s Club to compete more directly with Costco, which has become one of the largest hearing aid retailers in the United States through its in-store hearing centers and value-driven pricing model.

However, the NationsBenefits model may offer Sam’s Club a different competitive angle through its integration with Medicare Advantage and other insurance-based hearing benefits, an area where Costco has traditionally been more limited. The broader selection of hearing aid brands may also appeal to consumers looking for more choice than the previous Lucid-centered offering.

The companies said the collaboration is designed to improve access to hearing healthcare by combining in-person care inside Sam’s Club locations with digital support tools and remote follow-up services.

“By bringing modern and professional-grade care into the familiar environment of Sam’s Club, we are making it easier for individuals to take proactive steps toward better hearing, which we know is essential for cognitive health and emotional well-being.”

The partnership comes amid growing attention to the public health impact of untreated hearing loss. More than 1.5 billion people globally live with some degree of hearing loss, and the 2024 Lancet Commission on dementia prevention identified untreated hearing loss as the single largest modifiable risk factor for dementia.

By integrating the NationsHearing program into the Sam’s Club ecosystem, the companies said they aim to reduce barriers to care by offering a selection of prescription and OTC hearing aids from major manufacturers at value-oriented pricing.

“As a physician, I have dedicated my career to understanding how targeted wellness interventions can fundamentally change a person’s health trajectory,” said Glenn Parker, M.D., Founder and CEO of NationsBenefits.

“Hearing health is not an isolated issue, but a gateway to overall vitality. By bringing modern and professional-grade care into the familiar environment of Sam’s Club, we are making it easier for individuals to take proactive steps toward better hearing, which we know is essential for cognitive health and emotional well-being.”

Hybrid Hearing Care and Tele-Audiology Support

According to NationsBenefits, members will be able to visit participating Sam’s Club Hearing Centers for consultations and diagnostic screenings while also accessing digital support tools after the initial fitting. Remote hearing aid adjustments and follow-up care will be supported through smartphone-based tele-audiology services.

The hybrid approach reflects broader trends across the hearing care industry, where retailers, healthcare organizations, and manufacturers are increasingly blending in-person care with digital health technologies and remote support capabilities.

For Sam’s Club, the partnership may represent a broader repositioning of its hearing centers from a primarily retail hearing aid model toward a more integrated health and wellness offering tied to insurance benefits and ongoing care management.

Retail Hearing Competition Continues to Evolve

The hearing care landscape within warehouse retail chains has evolved considerably over the past decade as hearing aids have become more software-driven, connected, and consumer-oriented.

Costco has historically dominated the category through high-volume hearing aid dispensing and aggressive pricing. Sam’s Club’s partnership with NationsBenefits could represent an attempt to differentiate itself through insurance integration, telehealth support, and a broader wellness-focused care model.

The collaboration also reflects the continued convergence between healthcare delivery, retail access, and digital health technologies as companies look for new ways to expand access to hearing care services.
