MUNICH/FRANKFURT, GERMANY — Munich Airport is partnering with Sittig Technologies to pilot Auracast™ broadcast audio at six gates across Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. The pilot began July 14, 2026.
The project is intended to make airport announcements more accessible and personalized by allowing passengers to receive live gate information directly through compatible hearing aids, cochlear implants, headphones, or earbuds.
A New Way to Hear Gate Announcements
Auracast is a Bluetooth® audio broadcasting standard that allows airports to transmit announcements directly to passengers’ compatible personal devices. Rather than relying solely on loudspeakers, airports can make gate announcements available through hearing aids, cochlear implants, earbuds, and headphones that support Auracast.
Android users can scan a QR code displayed at the gate or select the stream directly from the Bluetooth menu to hear the announcement stream on their device. iOS users can access Auracast streams through third-party apps.
On compatible Android devices, Auracast announcements can fade in over music, podcasts, or other audio and then fade out once the announcement has ended, allowing passengers to continue listening without manually switching between audio sources.
The technology may be particularly useful for passengers with hearing loss, as announcements can be delivered directly to compatible hearing aids or cochlear implants without additional hardware at the gate. It also provides an alternative to traditional hearing loop systems.
Auracast may also improve communication for passengers without hearing loss. Travelers can continue wearing their earphones while receiving important information, and announcements may be easier to understand in noisy terminal areas.
Pilot Covers Six Gates Across Both Terminals
The pilot covers six gates across Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 at Munich Airport:
- Terminal 1: Gates A42/A43 and A44/A45 in Pier A
- Terminal 2: Gates G31 and G32
QR codes will be displayed at each gate, allowing passengers to connect their smartphones to the Auracast audio stream. Compatible hearing aids, cochlear implants, earbuds, and headphones may also connect directly.
“Munich Airport is the ideal partner to take Auracast to the next level in German aviation. This pilot builds on our experience at Frankfurt Airport and marks an important milestone in making Bluetooth broadcast audio a new standard for passenger communication.”
