Neosensory, a Silicon Valley technology startup that builds wristbands for hearing loss, has agreed to work with the government of South Korea to connect thousands of Koreans with hearing loss with state-of-the-art hearing technology.
Over 3 million South Koreans report they experience hearing loss.. Through Neosensory’s novel technology, the South Korean government will provide them a wrist-worn device that allows them to experience the sounds around them through patterns of vibration on the skin. The wristband has been shown to increase both quality of life and safety.
Sound Awareness, Hearing Enhancement and Tinnitus
The Neosensory wristband translates sounds around the wearer into specific vibratory patterns that, over time, are recognized as individual sounds. Things like machinery, alarms, babies, dogs, cars, and speech can be recognized and “heard” through the sensation of touch.
Neosensory was founded by CEO Dr. David Eagleman, a neuroscientist at Stanford University. Dr. Eagleman has a passion for expanding the ways people experience their senses. He created Neosensory in 2015 with the mission of helping those with hearing loss to experience sound. He invented the company’s flagship device, Sound Awareness, for this purpose. Sound Awareness is being used in homes and businesses across the world. Dr. Eagleman is proud to see this innovation spreading to Asia.
“This technology essentially transfers the inner ear to the skin of the wrist. It has been great to see this innovation from our laboratory spread to wrists around the world.”
–David Eagleman, Ph.D., CEO of Neosensory
The company has expanded its inventory of products over the years and now includes innovations useful to millions of individuals, clinics and doctor’s offices.
Their newest technology, called Clarify, uses similar haptic technology to help those with hearing loss to understand conversations more clearly. The wristband listens for the high-frequency speech sounds (phonemes) that become difficult to distinguish when high-frequency hearing loss is present.
Neosensory also offers a tinnitus relief program called Duo. In this mode, the wristband has been found to provide a clinically significant reduction in tinnitus symptoms in as little as eight weeks. The effectiveness of the Duo program, which utilizes bimodal stimulation, can be read about in the peer-reviewed study in The International Tinnitus Journal.
Both Sound Awareness and Duo will be accessible for the South Korean users using the company’s free app, providing an extra benefit for those who may be experiencing tinnitus.
In the United States, all of Neosensory’s modes are available on the device for no additional charge.
About Neosensory
Founded by Stanford neuroscientist David Eagleman and his lab, Neosensory has built a wristband that has revolutionized the hearing space. Neosensory’s innovative technology expands the brain’s sensory capacity: think of it like AR that operates through the skin instead of the eyes. Neosensory’s wearable devices take in information streams and translate them into patterns of vibration on the skin. With practice, the brain learns to understand this information at a direct perceptual level. Learn more at neosensory.com.
