The National Acoustic Laboratories (NAL) has released a new video, The Making of the NAL-NL3 Fitting System, providing a behind-the-scenes look at how its latest hearing aid fitting system was created. NAL-NL3, launched on September 22, 2025, succeeds NAL-NL2 nearly 15 years after its release and is designed to reflect evolving clinical needs, advances in hearing technology, and changing expectations among people with hearing loss.
According to NAL, the NAL-NL3 initiative became one of the most significant organizational efforts in its history. A small core team working on the project was expanded to include staff from across research, engineering, behavioral science, clinical services and operations, bringing a wide range of skills and perspectives into a single, focused program.
The video highlights how the organization adopted more agile and collaborative ways of working, with teams sharing data and feedback in real time and refining the fitting system in response to real-world experience. Validation work with clinic networks and input from both clinicians and hearing aid users helped ensure the new fitting formula was practical, acceptable and ready for use in everyday practice.
By documenting the development of NAL-NL3, NAL positions the fitting system as more than a technical update. The project is presented as a national innovation story that shows how coordinated research, clinical insight and product development can be combined to deliver tools that improve outcomes for people with hearing loss.
