Trihear has launched SmartMic, a compact remote microphone designed to stream a conversation partner’s voice directly to compatible hearing aids from Sonova-owned brands, including Phonak, Unitron, and Sennheiser.
Designed primarily for one-on-one conversations, the clip-on microphone is intended to provide additional listening support when background noise, distance, or room acoustics make speech more difficult to follow. The speaker wears the SmartMic, which sends their voice wirelessly to the listener’s compatible hearing aids.
According to Trihear, the device has been specifically optimized for hearing aids within Sonova’s brand portfolio. The company lists compatibility with selected Phonak, Unitron, and Sennheiser devices.
Designed for Sonova Hearing Aid Platforms
Trihear SmartMic is designed to connect directly with compatible hearing aids without requiring a separate receiver or neck-worn intermediary. The microphone can be clipped to the speaker’s clothing or worn on a lanyard and is designed to be positioned approximately 20 cm from the speaker’s mouth.
Following initial pairing, SmartMic automatically reconnects with compatible hearing aids when powered on.
Compatibility includes selected models across several Sonova-owned brands. Trihear lists Phonak Infinio, Lumity, Paradise, and Marvel devices, along with selected Unitron Blu, DX, Moxi, Ativo, and Vivante models and Sennheiser Sonite R devices. Exact compatibility can vary by hearing aid model and software version.
Up to 20 Meters of Wireless Range
SmartMic weighs 18 grams and provides a wireless range of up to 20 meters. The device incorporates automatic directional behavior intended to prioritize the voice of the person wearing the microphone.
Trihear lists up to eight hours of operating time, with approximately two hours required for a full recharge. Physical controls allow users to adjust volume directly from the microphone without relying on a smartphone app for routine operation.
If SmartMic moves outside its wireless range and remains disconnected for more than 10 minutes, the device automatically powers off to help conserve battery.
Focused on One-on-One Listening
Rather than positioning SmartMic as a more complex multi-microphone or group-listening system, Trihear is primarily targeting situations where a hearing aid wearer wants additional support hearing a single conversation partner.
By placing the microphone close to the person speaking and streaming the signal directly to compatible hearing aids, the system is designed to reduce some of the effects that distance and surrounding noise can have on speech understanding.
Potential applications include conversations at restaurants, in vehicles, during appointments, at home, and in other environments where hearing one person clearly may be challenging.
