Several October patents aim to automate tasks formerly performed by humans in audiology and ENT offices. To wit:
- Zipline Health’s #11471035 (Ear ailment diagnostic device and method) comprises an earpiece/light source, magnifying lens, air conduction channel, camera, optional thermometer and/or tympanometer, all coupled to a smart phone, thus allowing patients to benefit from accurate and effective diagnosis of ear ailments through self examination and remote diagnosis, leading to faster recovery, healing and/or treatment. - LG Electronics’s #11472037 (Robot for assisting a user in hearing) includes a speaker, microphone and processor to acquire a position of a user’s face when a hearing aid command is acquired on the basis of the voice recognized through the microphone; a driving unit to move the speaker toward the position of the user’s face, wherein the processor acquires a sound which is a target of hearing aid, generates an assistant sound by amplifying a predetermined frequency band of the sound or converting the predetermined frequency band of the sound into a different frequency band, and outputs the assistant sound through the speaker.

Holly Hosford-Dunn, PhD, owned and operated a dispensing audiology practice in Tucson and was active in management of HearingHealthMatters.org through 2017. She holds BA degrees in Communication Sciences, Psychology and Economics; MA in Communication Disorders; PhD in Hearing Sciences. Following post-doctoral work at Max Planck Institute (Munich, DE) and Eaton-Peabody Auditory Physiology Lab (Boston), she joined the Stanford medical school faculty as director of audiology. She has authored/edited numerous text books, chapters, journals, and articles and taught Marketing and Practice Management in a variety of academic settings. She continues to consult and write on topics related to hearing health care vis-à-vis consumer demands, professional training, technological advancement, capital investment, industry consolidation, regulatory control, product and service distribution, and strategic pricing.
