ROCKVILLE, MD—Kids will be featured nationwide in a video on YouTube if they are among the winners in a contest aimed at getting young people involved in preventing hearing loss.

Sponsored by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), the contest invites youngsters from 8 to 18 years of age to produce a 30- or 60-second audio or video PSA (public service announcement) that sends a “safe listening” message that will be compelling to other boys and girls.

The contest is part of “Listen to Your Buds,” ASHA’s award-winning public education campaign.

The winning entries in each of the contest’s four age categories will be featured on www.listentoyourbuds.org, promoted digitally on YouTube, and shared with local and national media outlets. In addition, cash prizes, gifts, and participation in a special “Buds” awards ceremony will be awarded.

“Through ASHA’s ‘Listen to Your Buds’ PSA contest, students can learn how to protect their hearing,” said Elizabeth Lasko, assistant executive director of the National Association for Music Education. “At a time when kids are listening to recorded music, playing musical instruments, and enjoying electronic media in increasing amounts, the contest’s grassroots approach is much needed.”
