According to Bernstein analyst, Toni Sacconaghi, sales of Apple’s AirPods could balloon to 85 million in 2020, generating approximately $15 billion in revenue for the company. Sales of the popular wireless earbuds this year had already doubled over 2018, reaching $6 billion in sales by the end of 2019.

AirPods have grown to become one of Apple’s most popular devices. Originally released in 2016, the latest generation of the popular earbuds, AirPods Pro, have been sold out at most retailers over the holiday season due to high demand.

If sales of AirPods continue at the same rate again in 2021, the product would become Apple’s third largest business, said Sacconaghi in a CBNC report.

Can AirPods Sales Growth Continue?

While Bernstein analyst Sacconaghi is bullish on the AirPods short-term growth, he expects sales to begin slowing in the next 12-24 months. With more iPhone owners purchasing AirPods, the number of potential customers will eventually decrease.

“Given AirPods’ extraordinarily steep adoption curve and rapid saturation of the iPhone installed base, we see a dramatic deceleration in AirPods revenue growth by 2021 or 22, to single digit growth rates or possibly lower”

AirPods Pro are currently priced at $249 for a pair on Apple’s website, while the regular version of AirPods start at $159.
