I run two private practices in Tucson, Arizona. I have always had a fascination with how things (from toasters to wireless) and people work, and audiology has given me a place to study both. I have been dispensing hearing aids for 20 years. I obtained my first license before I finished graduate school, when I was VERY young, and have owned, leased, contracted, and administrated in the hearing field, and became a landlord, in the past 15 years. I have also had publications in text books and trade journals focusing on patient satisfaction and hearing aid fittings. I hope to learn more through this editorial and blogging experience as well as share some of my journey in private practice. I live in a suburb of Tucson with my patient and understanding husband, Rick (who I must say is a top notch architect who designed and built the best Hearing Centers!) and my two sons, who make my heart swell and give me other wonderful perspectives on life! As do the myriad pets we seem to keep collecting.

Hansen’s Disease and Auditory Vestibular Disorders (Part 8)

Judy Huch
HHTM staff: In the penultimate post on leprosy,  the series finally begins addressing how the auditory/vestibular system fits into the spectrum of symptoms comprising this 20+ million year old disease.  The bacterial parasite that haunts the human body and causes leprosy had evaded scientific and medical understanding, even in the modern world.    Audiology is no exception. Added to the evasive

Judy Huch
HHTM staff: Today’s post continues the discussion of Hansen’s disease, leprosy, as part of HHTM’s infectious diseases series.  Last post described the difficulties of differential diagnosis and early philosophies of care and treatment of this little-understood but stigmatizing disease. Leprosariums in the 19th and 20th century isolated and quarantined-for-life those thought to have leprosy.  Carville was one of those places

Nasal Balloons for Otitis Media with Effusion

Judy Huch
By: Diana Holan, MS For decades, the standard medical treatment for childhood ear infections was antibiotic treatment, or PE tubes for difficult cases. According to a 2012 NIH report, there was a significant decline in office visits by children with otitis media (35% in 1997 to 25% in 2007), with the sharpest drop for children < 2 years that may

HHTM Staff: Hansen’s Disease (Leprosy) history, prevalence, clinical manifestations, mechanism of destruction, and means of diagnosis have been described so far in this series.  Today’s post touches on differential diagnosis and early, barbaric, ineffective treatment methods that  left those suspected of harboring the disease with ruined lives. Delayed Differential Diagnosis   The World Health Organization writes that  “clinical signs and symptoms… are

HHTM Staff: Hansen’s disease, (leprosy) is one of the “neglected” infectious diseases under review in this series.  Hansen’s is caused by a parasitic bacteria which makes a comfortable home in human bodies, sometimes for decades before manifesting as a variety of symptoms that depend on the person’s autoimmune response.   The bacteria is likely the oldest human parasite on earth, having

HHTM Staff:  Today’s post continues the discussion of Hansen’s disease, commonly known as leprosy, as part of HHTM’s Staff writings for infectious diseases series.  Leprosy is caused by a secretive bacteria that strips itself down after plunging into the human body, where it takes up long-term residence as a parasite.  It’s sneaky, disguising itself from the body’s autoimmune system for years, then emerging en
