Amid technological and regulatory disruptions, stressors known to many of us, the profession of audiology, at least to those on the outside, remains one of the least stressful jobs in the US. According to CareerCast, audiology ranked fourth among a group of professions, sandwiched between Hair Stylist and University Professors, considered to be the least stressful jobs. This is the third time in five years that audiologists have been ranked near the top of this list.

Diagnostic Medical Sonographer was ranked as the least stressful of the 200 careers rated by CareerCast. This is an indication that the relative importance of a job is not directly related to its apparent lack of stress, as this job plays an important role in healthcare, providing imagery for expectant mothers.

CareerCast.com used the following 11 criteria to compile its rankings of the least stressful jobs:

  • Career Growth Potential
  • Physical Demands
  • Environmental Conditions
  • Hazards Encountered
  • Meeting the Public
  • Competition
  • Risk of Death or Grievous Injury
  • Immediate Risk of Another’s Life
  • Deadlines
  • Working in the Public Eye

 

Interestingly, six of the top ten jobs are part of the healthcare sector of the economy. Beyond Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, which ranked #1, here is a run-down of the top 10 least stressful job:

  • Hair Stylist
  • Audiologist
  • University Professor
  • Medical Records Technician
  • Jeweler
  • Operations Research Analyst
  • Pharmacy Technician
  • Medical Lab Technician

 

Audiology Career Outlook: High Growth, Low Stress

 

Audiologists were among the top paid within the Top 10 least stressful jobs, with a reported median annual income of just under $75,000. Among the Top 10, audiologists were pegged to have the second highest growth outlook, trailing only Operations Research Analyst. The combination of high growth levels and low stress levels would seem to bode well for the future of the profession of audiology.
