Upcoming NASEM Meeting Continues Discussion on Affordability and Accessibility of Hearing Care

On Friday, June 9th the National Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) will convene a full day meeting devoted to accessible and affordable hearing care for adults. The meeting will begin at 9 am EDT and is a continuation of the December 7 NASEM meeting focused on this topic. You can attend the June 9 meeting virtually by registering here.

According to the agenda posted on the NASEM website the meeting will begin with an update of progress on recommendations stemming from NASEM’s June 2016 report. Updates are expected to include the following topics:

  • Public Awareness – Hearing Loss Association of America
  • Research Funding Opportunities – National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders
  • Public Health – Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
  • Device Regulation – Food and Drug Administration
  • Competition, Innovation, and Consumer Protection – Federal Trade Commission
  • PSAP Standards

The June 9 meeting will also have several afternoon breakout sessions, including time devoted to 1.) Public Education and Awareness, 2.) Quality Metrics and Health Professional Education, 3.) Innovation in Technologies, 4.) Innovation in Services—Access and Affordability.

NASEM Committee Chair, Dan Blazer, MD, as seen in the brief video above, mentions that due to the high cost of care, OTC hearing aids are one of the “most important” and also “most controversial” aspects of the NASEM report recommendations on hearing healthcare in the US.
