With hearing loss representing a growing yet vastly undertreated global health crisis, a new webinar looks to combat widespread misconceptions and stigma that discourage people from seeking help.

The online event titled “Hearing Loss Misconceptions and Breaking Stigma” is being hosted by Tuned, a digital hearing health company providing preventive and comprehensive hearing health for employers. It will feature insights from Dr. Kathleen Wallace, Tuned’s Audiologist and Head of Provider Education, and Dr. Heather Malyuk, the company’s Head of Audiology.

According to startling data from the World Health Organization (WHO), over 80% of global hearing care needs currently go unmet. Unaddressed hearing loss also amounts to around $1 trillion in economic costs per year worldwide. Lack of awareness and access to preventive care play a major role, but societal stigma surrounding hearing issues creates further barriers.

“Misconceptions about hearing loss, like assumptions about what it feels like or what age it starts, often discourage employees from proactively managing their hearing health or seeking treatmentOur webinar will separate fact from fiction and emphasize why overcoming these stigmas is so important.”

The one-hour webinar, scheduled for March 20th at 12pm ET, will cover key WHO statistics on the prevalence and impacts of hearing loss and hearing complications. It will explore who is most at risk, such as the billions of young people endangered by noise-induced hearing damage from personal audio devices.

“Too often, hearing health is dismissed as just an inevitable part of aging,” said Dr. Malyuk. “We need to change that mindset and inspire people to be proactive, not just for their own wellbeing but to mitigate huge societal costs of this growing crisis.”
